Hard water is a result of the harmless minerals calcium and magnesium in your water supply. These have been collected as natural rainwater flows underground.

Although harmless hard water can affect your home in several ways:

  • Limescale appears and builds up in sinks, baths, and shower doors
  • The flow of water in shower heads and taps reduces as limescale builds up
  • The build-up of limescale can damage and reduce the efficiency of your appliances and heating systems
  • Requires much more washing powder when doing laundry
  • Increases the need for descalers throughout your home

Did you know?

Hard water areas have higher levels of calcium and bicarbonate ions. These ions bind together when heat or pressure are present to form calcium carbonate – commonly known as ‘limescale’.

Hard water areas of the United Kingdom:

The hardness of water is commonly measured in parts per million (ppm) – water with less than 60ppm is considered soft. This is found in large parts of Wales and Scotland and most of the South West of England, although most of England is considered to have hard water with 200ppm and more.

Getting the mineral levels right so that the water is good to drink and does not affect the water pipes is a growing concern among households. It’s no surprise, therefore, that it is becoming increasingly common for homes affected by hard water to be fitted with water conditioners.

As the water flows through the ActivFlo the natural conductivity of the water causes the metals to react with one another generating an electric field on the surface of the patented alloy, this electrical field causes the calcium and bicarbonate ions to precipitate from the water forming an insoluble microscopic calcium carbonate crystal called aragonite.
